Gynecomastia is a condition that can cause men to develop excess skin, fat, and breast tissue on their chests. The surgery performed to address gynecomastia is frequently referred to as a male breast reduction, and is a safe and effective method for removing the excess fatty or glandular breast tissue that causes the issue. If you’re feeling frustrated by the presence of excess breast tissue, gynecomastia surgery can help you enjoy a more masculine appearance, and all of the confidence that comes along with it. To get started learning more about how gynecomastia surgery can help you enjoy your ideal physique, reach out and set up your consultation at our Merritt Island or Melbourne, FL offices today.

The best way to know whether or not gynecomastia surgery is right for you is to meet with our board-certified plastic surgery specialists. During your consultation, a highly experienced surgeon who specializes in body contouring will evaluate your chest, listen to your goals, and get to know your lifestyle and medical history. This will enable them to make the most accurate possible recommendations for the treatment that will produce your ideal results.
This will also give us the opportunity to address any concerns you might have about your upcoming procedure. We’ll discuss everything from the surgical technique that’ll be used, to how long your procedure will take, and more. We will also schedule pre- and post-operative appointments, as we make it a point to work with and support our customers at every stage in their journey with us.
There are two primary methods by which our board-certified plastic surgeons can treat gynecomastia. The technique that’s best for you will depend on your lifestyle, body type, and personal cosmetic goals. During your consultation, you’ll work together with your surgeon to carefully explore your options and decide upon the technique that’s right for you.
If you’re only dealing with a relatively minor amount of excess fatty tissue, but little to no excess skin, liposuction is likely your best option. During this process, a board-certified plastic surgeon will make a small incision to guide a cannula—or hollow tube—into the area of fatty tissue. This fatty tissue will be broken up before the cannula is used to remove it completely.
For patients with excess glandular tissue, your board-certified plastic surgeon will remove the excess glandular tissue and skin. They can also reposition and resize your nipple to ensure it better complements your chest.
Both procedures are performed alongside an anesthesiologist in a state-licensed, nationally accredited Ambulatory Surgery Center, ensuring that your treatment comes with the highest levels of safety and comfort.

Gynecomastia is quite common, but in some instances, it resolves on its own without any kind of medical intervention. Gynecomastia can occur for a number of reasons, including the use of certain medications. In some cases, identifying and treating the underlying condition can help improve gynecomastia.
An enlarged breast caused by excess fatty tissue can often be improved with lifestyle changes, such as proper diet and exercise. For many men, however, male breast surgery has proven to be the most successful method for delivering remarkable changes and long-lasting results.
You will see the first signs of improvement immediately after your gynecomastia surgery. However, most patients begin to see their full results after all post-surgical swelling has resolved. Your appearance will continue to improve until the area has completely healed, especially if you take care to wear the prescribed compression garment and refrain from taking certain medications.
In most cases, the results of gynecomastia surgery are permanent. Fat and glandular tissues are removed from the chest to eliminate the appearance of breasts. When the underlying causes of breast growth are not addressed by an experienced physician, especially one who specializes in the patient’s medical condition that has caused an enlarged chest, there is a chance that the tissue may grow back. Often, addressing gynecomastia requires two or more doctors and a multidisciplinary approach to treat not just the symptoms, but also the causes of gynecomastia.
For best results, we recommend that patients reach an ideal weight before undergoing surgery. Pseudogynecomastia is a condition that causes excess fatty tissue that can look like breasts, due to being overweight. In cases like this, weight loss may be the solution. However, a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon is the best way to learn more about your options.
Generally speaking, insurance companies view male breast reduction surgery as an elective procedure and one that is not medically necessary. They will therefore not supplement the cost of the surgery.
Studies conducted by the National Institute of Health have shown that marijuana use can cause breast growth in men. Because the drug remains illegal at the federal level, there have not been enough studies performed to conclusively determine any direct correlation between its use and the development of gynecomastia. As more states approve the use of marijuana both medically and recreationally, there should be more studies performed in the future. For now, it remains possible that marijuana use in men can increase the size of the breasts, though this does not appear to be true for females.
