    Our Brow Lift Techniques

    The Classic Brow Lift

    Sometimes also known as an “open brow lift,” the classic brow lift technique sees your surgeon making an incision that will be concealed beneath your hairline. Skin will be lifted and muscle tissue will be repositioned for a more youthful look. This technique is ideal for those with more advanced signs of facial aging.

    The Limited Incision Brow Lift

    This technique is quite similar to the classic brow lift, but differentiates itself by utilizing two small incisions on either side of your head, through which skin will be lifted and excess fat will be removed. This procedure is ideal for older patients, or for those with mild to moderate sagging or drooping in the forehead area.

    Endoscopic Brow Lift

    An endoscopic brow lift is similar to the limited incision lift, in that the incisions made by the surgeon are very small and will heal without leaving visible incision lines. The primary difference is the use of an endoscope (or small camera) to guide the surgeon through the procedure, enabling us to create smaller incisions for a much faster healing time.

    Hairline Lowering (Trichophytic) Brow Lift

    This approach sees your surgeon placing an incision that runs along the frontal hairline, allowing it to be camouflaged by your natural growth. This technique is ideal for patients who prefer to wear their hair short, or for patients who tend to tie their hair back. It successfully addresses horizontal forehead lines and vertical “11” lines between the eyebrows.

    Endoscopic Midbrow Lift

    This technique utilizes the endoscopic approach for a less invasive procedure. Your surgeon will create small incisions in your mid-forehead region before repositioning and/or reshaping your brows, improving vertical lines between the brows and elevating your upper face. Men have a tendency to favor this particular approach, but it’s appropriate for all patients.

    Temple Lift

    The temple lift elevates either side of your brow, and is ideal for those who are interested in addressing drooping or sagging in the lateral brow area. The temple lift, as its name suggests, elevates the temples and creates a more youthful and open appearance, so you can enjoy lasting results that create your ideal appearance.

    Injectable Brow Lift Alternatives

    Depending on the state of your forehead, a brow lift might not be the best option for you. If you're only dealing with a few lines between your brows or across your forehead, a BOTOX®, Dysport®, or Xeomin® treatment might be the better solution. 

    The main ingredient in these treatments prevents the nerves from communicating with the muscles responsible for those frown lines or forehead creases, giving you a smoother look without any significant downtime.

    Recovery After Your Brow Lift

    Although the different brow lift procedures offer different results and vary in terms of complexity and invasiveness, the recovery period for each option is relatively similar. In general, you can expect to take about a week off from your job. Some movement is recommended during your initial recovery, to keep your blood flowing, but anything particularly vigorous should be avoided until your surgeon gives you the all-clear. Bending, straining, and lifting anything heavy are all off-limits for at least two weeks after surgery.

    Swelling and bruising will occur in the area and will start to diminish after a couple of weeks. Cold compresses can be used to help keep the swelling to a minimum. It's also a good idea to sit upright and prop yourself up with pillows before sleeping. Any swelling around the brows and eyes will peak two days after your surgery, before fully declining over the next two weeks. A tight feeling is common for a few days, as is an itchy or tingly scalp as the sensation returns.

    Are There Any Risks or Potential Complications?

    Brow lifts have very few complications, and our team always works to ensure the fastest, most comfortable recovery possible. The normal risks of surgery, though rare, include:

    • Infection
    • Bleeding
    • Hematoma
    • Change in sensation around your scalp and forehead

    One of my eyebrows is higher than the other. Can a brow lift fix this?

    Yes. Eyebrow asymmetry can often be improved with either a completely one-sided brow lift or a brow lift that raises one side more than the other. The method chosen will depend on the other issues you wish to correct. Since the procedure will vary depending on your specific situation, a consultation with one of our Facial Plastic Surgeons—Dr. Clevens or Dr. Barbee—is necessary to determine the best approach.

    I have forehead wrinkles, but my brows aren’t drooping. Do I still need a brow lift?

    If the brows themselves are in a good position, you may benefit from simply using dermal fillers or neuromodulators to smooth the creases on your forehead. This is a temporary solution, however, since the results created by fillers will only last for about six to 12 months, while a brow lift creates more long-lasting effects. These options come down to a trade-off between lasting results and lower invasiveness.

    What are my options for getting an arched brow if my eyebrows naturally go straight across?

    If tweezing and waxing alone can’t give you an arch, you do have other options. Judiciously applied BOTOX can create a slight temporary arch, so for many patients, this might be the first option. If you’d like a more customizable or long-lasting arch, a brow lift can be used to raise the necessary sections of the brow to create a pleasing look. Again, this is a situation where the specific facial structure is important, so a consultation with Dr. Clevens or Dr. Barbee is necessary to determine exactly what can be accomplished.

    What will the incision lines be like after my brow lift?

    It depends on the type of lift that you have done. An endoscopic brow lift leaves only a few tiny incisions, which will be hidden in the hair. A limited-incision brow lift leaves two small incision lines at the outer corners of the forehead, and these are typically completely hidden in the hairline as well. The largest incision is required by the classic brow lift, which leaves an incision line running the length of the forehead right along the hairline. This can generally be angled so that hair can grow through it, camouflaging it nicely.

    Will I have that surprised look after my brow lift?

    That “overly-lifted” look comes from a brow that has been raised too much, and it can be avoided simply by being more conservative with the lift. In general, a natural-looking result can be achieved by maintaining an attractive shape of the brow in conjunction with the orbital rim rather than simply lifting the whole brow as much as possible. For optimal results, be sure to consult with an experienced facial plastic surgery specialist who is skilled in the artistry of brow lifting.
