Do I Need a Nose Job or Revision Rhinoplasty?

If you're unhappy with the appearance of your nose, rhinoplasty can help you achieve your desired look, whether that means a more refined, smaller, or straighter nose. Additionally, if you experience significant congestion or discomfort due to the structure of your nose, rhinoplasty can enhance your breathing and improve sinus function.

However, if you've previously had one or more rhinoplasty procedures and are still unsatisfied with the results, you may be a suitable candidate for revision rhinoplasty. It's important to note that revision rhinoplasty can be more complex than the initial procedure, as there is often less cartilage available to work with after previous surgeries.

Am I a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

To determine if rhinoplasty aligns with your goals, it’s essential to consult with Dr. Clevens or Dr. Barbee, both of whom are experts in facial plastic surgery specializing in rhinoplasty in Orlando. Rhinoplasty can be performed on men and women of all ages, but it's important that the nose is fully developed before the procedure is considered.

Suitable candidates for rhinoplasty are those who have realistic expectations, as surgery cannot guarantee perfection. However, Dr. Ross Clevens and Dr. Phillip Barbee are dedicated to meeting and exceeding their patients’ medical and aesthetic needs. Additionally, an ideal candidate is someone in good health with a positive outlook.

What Are the Benefits of Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty offers a range of functional and cosmetic benefits by refining and reshaping your nose. Patients often experience:

  • Improved breathing
  • Reduced congestion
  • Enhanced comfort

In addition to these functional improvements, rhinoplasty can significantly boost self-esteem by enhancing the appearance of your nose and overall facial aesthetics. Many of our patients report feeling more attractive and enjoying a heightened sense of self-confidence in both social and professional environments after their procedure.

Instead of drawing attention solely to your nose, rhinoplasty promotes facial harmony, allowing others to appreciate the overall balance of your features. Common concerns that patients seek to address include the following:

  • Noses that are overly large, wide, or small
  • Bumps or humps on the bridge of the nose
  • Crooked or misshapen noses
  • Poorly defined nasal contours
  • Asymmetrical nostrils
  • Previous nasal trauma
  • Deviated septums or enlarged turbinates (the structures within the nasal passage)
  • Breathing difficulties due to a deviated septum
  • Sinus issues

Getting Started with Your Consultation

The first step in realizing your rhinoplasty goals is to meet with Dr. Clevens or Dr. Barbee and their team. Your consultation will begin with a conversation about your motivations for pursuing rhinoplasty, and we encourage you to bring photos that illustrate the types of noses you like and dislike.

During the consultation, Dr. Clevens or Dr. Barbee will assess your nose and provide recommendations for achieving your desired results. Together, you will collaborate to design a personalized procedure that addresses your needs, while your surgeon will ensure that all your questions are answered, helping you feel comfortable and informed about what to expect.

This consultation is also an excellent time to explore other plastic surgery options related to your facial features. It is essential to discuss all potential options with our supportive surgical team before making any decisions.

Once your treatment plan is finalized, we will provide you with a quote for the surgery and discuss any available financing options. Finally, we will schedule your surgery and any necessary pre- and post-operative appointments, ensuring you feel supported throughout the process.

Our "Liquid Rhinoplasty" Technique

For certain patients, nonsurgical rhinoplasty can be an effective option for addressing their concerns. Dr. Clevens, a globally recognized expert, has shared his "Liquid Rhinoplasty" technique with hundreds of facial plastic surgeons. Rather than surgically altering the physical structure of the nose and nasal passages, this approach involves the precise application of dermal fillers to reshape the nose. However, this technique may not be suitable for those seeking a smaller, more contoured nose, so we recommend discussing it with your surgeon during your consultation.

How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?

At Clevens Face and Body Specialists, our surgeons perform rhinoplasty at a state-licensed, nationally accredited Ambulatory Surgery Center alongside a physician anesthesiologist. We prioritize the highest standards of safety and comfort for our patients.

During your surgery, Dr. Clevens or Dr. Barbee will create incisions either externally between the nostrils (known as "open" rhinoplasty) or internally within the nose (referred to as "closed" rhinoplasty). The technique selected will depend on your specific needs, and your surgeon will thoroughly explain the details of your procedure before it begins. Our aim is to ensure you have complete peace of mind as you anticipate your results so that we can discuss all aspects of your procedure with you beforehand.

Your Rhinoplasty Procedure: Step-by-Step

A successful rhinoplasty involves several key steps:

Consultation

You will have a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Clevens or Dr. Barbee, who will thoroughly discuss your procedure and address any questions. Detailed aftercare instructions will also be provided.

Anesthesia

On the day of your surgery, anesthesia or sedation will be administered to ensure your comfort and safety.

Incision

The surgeon will make an incision using either the open or closed technique, as determined during your consultation.

Restructuring

The skin will be lifted from the incisions, allowing your surgeon to reshape the nose.

Nasal Reshaping

Your nasal plastic surgeon will reshape the cartilage, adjust and reset bones as necessary, and use cartilage grafts to modify the bone structure.

Closure

The raised skin will be lowered back into place, and the incisions will be carefully closed.

Post-Operative Support

Finally, tape and a custom plastic splint will be gently applied to help maintain the shape of your new nose during the healing process.

Recovery After Rhinoplasty

Return To Your Daily Routine In Seven To Ten Days

The First Few Days

For the initial days, your nose will be splinted to ensure proper healing. However, most patients can quickly return to work and their daily activities by using ice packs and getting plenty of bed rest.

While you can resume normal activities, it is important to take precautions, such as sleeping with your head elevated, to promote optimal healing. Dr. Clevens and Dr. Barbee will prescribe medication to help manage any discomfort, and many patients find that their discomfort is less than they expected.

Weeks One and Two

  • Following your rhinoplasty, you may experience some bruising and swelling. However, the facial plastic surgeons at Clevens Face and Body Specialists use natural healing serums and TXA (tranexamic acid) during the procedure, which often results in minimal to no bruising for many patients.
  • Your dressing will be removed at the end of the first week, and you should start to see significant changes in the shape of your nose. This shape will continue to improve as swelling decreases. For the next 48 hours, you should apply ice compresses to help manage swelling.
  • By the second week, you should notice a reduction in fullness, allowing you to see the changes in your nasal structure. While healing varies from person to person, the initial swelling typically subsides quickly and will continue to diminish over several months.
  • For the first three to four months, it’s essential to avoid contact sports, diving, and other strenuous activities that could jeopardize your results. We will provide you with detailed guidelines on safe activities as you prepare to reveal your final rhinoplasty results.
  • Sleeping with your head elevated at a 45-degree angle (or as close as possible) for the first two weeks is crucial for managing swelling and bruising. We also advise against activities that could significantly raise your heart rate.
  • During the first two weeks after surgery, it is important to avoid blowing your nose and sneezing. If you need to sneeze, open your mouth to minimize irritation to your healing nasal tissues.

Year One

After a full year of healing, the reshaping of your nose should be fully apparent. Rhinoplasty results are generally long-lasting, although your skin will continue to age as time goes on.

What Are the Risks of Rhinoplasty?

As an elective procedure, rhinoplasty is conducted under the safest conditions. Dr. Clevens and Dr. Barbee prioritize patient safety and comfort by performing surgeries at a fully accredited ambulatory surgery center with physician anesthesiologists. When performed by experienced and highly trained surgeons like Dr. Clevens and Dr. Barbee, the risks associated with nasal contouring surgery can be significantly reduced. However, as with any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty does carry some rare risks, which may include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Complications related to anesthesia
  • Nasal blockages
  • Damage to the nasal septum or skin
  • Inability to achieve the desired aesthetic outcome

Are There Nonsurgical Options for Rhinoplasty?

While surgery is the only long-lasting solution for rhinoplasty, dermal fillers can offer temporary improvements and may be suitable for some patients. If you’re interested, Dr. Clevens and Dr. Barbee can discuss the 'Liquid Rhinoplasty' option with you.

Will My Bones Need to Be Broken During Surgery?

Based on your surgical goals, the nasal bones may be reshaped, carved, or reset. This process is not as daunting as it sounds and allows the nose to heal in the desired shape. All techniques will be thoroughly discussed with you prior to the procedure.

Can I Wear Glasses After Surgery?

This is a common concern. Glasses can place pressure on the nasal bridge and are typically not worn during the initial recovery period. Dr. Clevens will help you find alternatives for vision correction during this time.

When Will I See the Final Results of My Rhinoplasty?

Most of the swelling will subside within the first few months, making the changes less noticeable, but once all swelling has resolved, the final results will not be fully visible for about a year. The final outcome should appear natural and long-lasting.

Why Should I Choose a Board-certified Facial Plastic Surgeon?

Rhinoplasty is a complex procedure that should be performed by a highly trained, board-certified surgeon specializing in facial plastic surgery rather than a general plastic surgeon. Selecting the right surgeon is crucial for a successful outcome.

What Is the Right Age for Rhinoplasty?

The nose typically stops growing around ages 15 to 17 for girls and 17 to 19 for boys. This is why many surgeons prefer not to operate on individuals younger than 15, even with parental consent. It’s best to wait until you and your surgeon are confident that the nose has fully developed.

Will There Be Any Scarring?

Open rhinoplasty results in a very small scar that is often negligible and fades well over time, typically becoming unnoticeable to others. Closed rhinoplasty does not produce external scarring, and noticeable scars are quite rare.

Can Rhinoplasty Change My Voice?

While it is extremely uncommon, rhinoplasty can occasionally alter the sound and tone of the voice. If you are a singer, voice actor, or use your voice professionally, it is important to discuss this concern with your surgeon before scheduling your procedure.

How Much Does Rhinoplasty Cost?

The rhinoplasty cost can vary based on several factors, including the surgeon's expertise and the procedure's location. If rhinoplasty is performed for functional reasons, it’s more likely that some costs may be covered by insurance. Generally, our price range for rhinoplasty is between $8,000 and $15,000, and we can discuss financing options during your consultation.
