When to Consider Breast Implant Exchange

If you're unhappy with the look of your current breast augmentation or have been experiencing issues with your breast implants, a breast implant exchange may be an excellent choice for you. Patients often seek out this procedure when they find that they have entered a different stage in life and would prefer a new size or type of breast implant. The most common candidates for breast implant exchange surgery are women having trouble with their current breast implants. When you visit Clevens Face and Body Specialists, you’ll meet with an extensively experienced breast and body contouring specialist who will get to know your concerns and help you find a solution to the issues that you’ve brought to us.

Capsular Contracture

Capsular contracture refers to the uncomfortable hardening of tissue around a breast implant. When a breast implant is placed, the patient’s body will naturally form a tissue capsule around it. In some rare cases, this tissue capsule can tighten and harden. While this often causes an appearance that is less than ideal, it can also cause severe discomfort.

Rupture or Leakage

In some cases, saline implants can also rupture or leak. If you suspect that this has happened to you, we recommend reaching out to your surgeon as soon as possible. Implant rupture or leakage often motivates women to exchange their saline implants for modern silicone gel implants, which offer an enhanced level of safety and resilience.

Your Pre-Operative Consultation

Breast implant complications can take many forms, which makes your pre-operative consultation an important part of the process. During your consultation, you’ll meet with a board-certified breast and body contouring specialist who has extensive experience resolving breast implant issues.

Your surgeon will get to know your health history and the complications you’ve been facing, while also learning more about your lifestyle and personal cosmetic goals. With this information in mind, they’ll be able to recommend a course of action that not only corrects your issues but also gives you the opportunity to enjoy your ideal bust.

Once you’ve landed on the procedure and technique that’s right for you, you’ll discuss details like financing options and begin scheduling your procedure. We’ll be sure to schedule follow-up appointments, as we make it a point to support and care for our patients throughout the recovery process.

You’ll experience an elevated level of attentive care as you rest, recover, and get ready to look forward to your breast implant exchange results. Our team will remain available to you at every step of the way, addressing any concerns you might have and ensuring your comfort while you recover.

Breast Implant Exchange Procedure Options

During your consultation, you’ll talk over the options for your breast implant exchange procedure in detail, before choosing from one of the following options.

Saline to Silicone

If you're unhappy with your saline implants and want to switch to silicone implants, we can easily replace them using the same incision line. Details like the weight differences of each type of implant will be discussed with you before surgery, so you can make the most informed possible decision.

Silicone to Saline

If you're unhappy with your saline implants and want to switch to modern silicone implants, we can easily replace them using the same incision line. Details like the weight differences of each type of implant will be discussed with you before surgery, so you can make the most informed possible decision.

Increasing Implant Size

Some patients are interested in increasing the size of their implants. If this sounds like you, we’ll work with you to find the implant size that aligns with your personal goals and lifestyle. By using implant spacers with a sports bra, we can actually help you “try on” different implant sizes before your procedure.

Your Implant Exchange Procedure

As with the majority of the procedures performed here at Clevens Face and Body Specialists, your breast implant exchange procedure will be tailored directly to your unique needs and personal goals.

We'll place you under general anesthesia during your breast implant exchange procedure before your surgeon makes an incision over your previous incision line in a way that enables us to avoid any addition to your visible incision. Your current implants will be carefully removed. In case of capsular contracture, your surgeon will remove any hardened tissue and ruptured implant material that may be present. Then, your new implants will be placed and your incision carefully closed.

The Recovery Process

A breast implant exchange is an outpatient procedure, so you’ll be able to return home the same day as your surgery. Most patients can expect their recovery process to be comparable to what was experienced during their initial breast augmentation. You’ll likely notice some swelling and discomfort for a few days, which will subside over several weeks. You can return to light daytime activities following the surgery.

FAQ

Are my implants permanent?

Is a saline or silicone implant better for a natural look?

Is it safe to get pregnant after breast augmentation surgery?

Should I consider a breast implant exchange if my other implants are old?

Are my implants permanent?

Breast implants have a long life and can help your breasts maintain a youthful appearance. However, they are not intended to last a lifetime and some women will find that they need to have a breast implant revision in the future.

Is a saline or silicone implant better for a natural look?

Both saline and silicone implants can result in a natural look. Modern techniques have improved the naturalistic appearance of implants, so you can enjoy the most natural-looking augmentation possible.

Is it safe to get pregnant after breast augmentation surgery?

Yes. Breast implants are completely safe for pregnant women and pose no additional risks, although pregnancy and nursing can cause the breasts to sag. Some women choose to have a secondary breast augmentation or a breast lift after having children.

Should I consider a breast implant exchange if my other implants are old?

If you are still pleased with the results of your original augmentation, then there may be little reason to have another. However, if you want to enhance your look or change the size of your bust, then breast re-augmentation may be a good option. The best way to find out if a breast implant exchange is right for you is to schedule a consultation with our breast and body specialists.
